Augmented Reality using Zapworks
Week 3 of emerging technology had me explore Augmented Reality.
We used an online service called Zapworks to host the AR projects and also used Unity Engine to prepare the models.
If you scan the QR codes with your phone’s camera, then you will be able to scan the image alongside it and it will display a 3D model on your screen that you can see.
The first QR code will show you a simple hut.
This second QR code will display the same model but with added animations.
After these 2 initial tests, we were given free rein over what we made. This of course was immediately made funny by putting in 3D models of the most random things like internet memes.
The following QR code will show a 3D model of a cat that was a meme some time ago.
A couple of days after this, I went back to the AR to make a more serious model. Something proper to showcase instead of the above.
Continuing the theme of trying to make as much of my assignments around motorsports and F1, I downloaded an asset of an F1 car to make another model.
Running through the steps again, I made sure that the model looked good and created everything in Unity Engine before doing everything required in Zapworks.
Overall, I enjoyed doing this method of showcasing a 3D model. It’s innovative and while it has its errors, I didn’t have any difficulty setting it up and producing what I’ve shown above.
Experimenting with this technology was actually fun unlike other emerging technology that I’ve used in the span of this module. I can see the practical uses of it in the public eye as well, potentially doing things with marketing, advertising and more.
